How to care for your glasses so they stay beautiful and functional

Glasses spend so much time with us. Every morning they wake you up to a sharp world, accompany you to work, through rain, through sunshine, through tired eyes and evening films. And when you care for them well, they last not just functionally, but beautifully too.

But glasses aren't indestructible. And we at the practice see everything they have to endure each day. So we've put together a few tips on how to help them live a long, clean, and comfortable life.

1. A cloth isn't just any rag

Probably the most common mistake nearly all of us make. We spot a smudge on the lenses? We reach for a sleeve, a paper napkin, or even use the shirt we're wearing. Always use a microfibre cloth (the one you got with your glasses) and if needed, a cleaning spray without alcohol. If the lenses are dustier than usual, don't clean them dry – use water too. Lens surfaces are delicate and need to be cared for with love.

2. No hot water

It might sound strange – after all, water is clean. But hot water can damage the coatings on the lenses, especially anti-reflective and blue light protection. Wash your glasses only with lukewarm water, ideally with a drop of gentle soap without alcohol. Then all you need to do is dry them with the cloth.

3. Don't wear them on your head. Or loose in your bag.

Yes, yes, we all do it. We push our glasses onto the top of our head when we don't need them just then, but this way the frame only stretches unnecessarily. Tossing them carelessly into a bag or purse full of keys and other hazards isn't the happiest solution either. Always use the case you got from us when putting them away.

4. Find them a safe spot

It sounds like a joke, but if glasses could talk, they'd tell dozens of stories about cushions and seats they've seen far too closely. So always look for a place where they'll be safe when you put them down.

5. Treat them to a service now and then

Glasses loosen over time, especially the screws on the temples, or they stretch here and there and start to slip. If you feel the frame is looser than it used to be, stop by. We'll look at everything, tighten, adjust.

6. Watch out for fogging

Steam from your breath can settle on the lenses and gradually change their surface. If you wear glasses during autumn and winter months, use an anti-fog spray or tuck them under the top edge of your face mask, scarf, or neck warmer.

7. Heat and cold aren't friends

Lenses can get damaged even during something as simple as cooking. Opening the oven is accompanied by steam that stops right at the lenses. These can be damaged by the heat. Whether heat or cold, both are a menace for glasses left in the car. It's great to have your glasses always at hand, but definitely don't leave them in a parked car.

Caring for glasses isn't a science, it's more a set of small habits. But these are exactly what decide whether they last one year or five.
