Behind the microphone, where pronunciation wins over facial expressions, most Slovak actors take their turn.
They rarely know the full story, though. Max's job is to whisper the right emotion to the actors so it fits the original. What fascinates him is watching the depth and range of the human voice.
Even though dubbing is good practice, Max feels most at home in theatre. After studying directing, he co-founded Divadlo iks – an independent group that explores the problems young people face in the big world. One of their productions, "Láska som ja", can be regularly seen at Studio 12 in Bratislava.
"Independent theatres are truly the most dependent. There's little funding to get them started, and two years of pandemic have left their mark on audience attendance. Still, we want to keep exploring the themes that trouble us, in our own way."
