When should children be protected from the sun?
Days when the playground is the whole world and every meadow an adventure. Summer is coming, and with it more time in the sun.

Unlike an adult eye, a child's is still developing, and our inattention can leave lasting consequences. How and when should a child wear sunglasses?
We explore the dangers of ultraviolet radiation in more detail in a separate article here, so let's summarize the theory briefly: UV is an invisible part of electromagnetic radiation that partially penetrates directly to the retina and, without adequate protection, can lead to premature cataracts or macular degeneration causing vision loss. A child's lens is completely clear and far more permeable than an adult's. Sun protection therefore shouldn't be underestimated, but neither should it be overdone.
Developing vision is very sensitive and gradually learns to protect itself naturally from the sun. A child's eye is still getting used to light conditions, so wearing glasses too often or glasses that are too dark can actually be harmful. The ability to adapt to light is important for visual perception. If a child isn't allowed to develop it, they may show light sensitivity with excessive tearing, headaches, or photophobia.
Sun protection is still necessary during time in direct sunlight, near water (where light reflects), and in the mountains. But if a child is in the shade, a cap or pram canopy is enough. Sunglasses are also not recommended for dusk or overcast days. A child should be able to see the world as sharply and colorfully as possible, ideally equally with both eyes. So it's important that sunglasses are free of smudges and scratches.

Requirements naturally change with age – babies under 6 months should avoid direct sun altogether, and sunglasses outside of health complications aren't necessary. It's fine to start gradually introducing sunglasses to a six-month-old. As children grow, activity and playfulness increase, so it's important to choose a model that fits well, doesn't press, and allows for movement. For completely healthy eyes we have frames made from safe plastics in cheerful colors. For those needing refractive correction, we also offer prescription glasses with sun clips.
All sunglasses in our portfolio have 100% UVA and UVB protection. You can browse them here. And we're happy to help with any questions about the sun or anything else.
